The business owes its origin to the Richardson family, successively goldsmiths in the city in the eighteenth century, and dates its beginnings from the grant of the freedom of the city on 3 April 1703 to Richard Richardson I, who began the business in Eastgate Row in the building of the present firm. For further information on the early history of the Richardson family see M.R. Ridgway, Chester goldsmiths from early times to 1726, Chester Archaeological Society, vol. 53, 1966. However, no records of the business have been found earlier than 1843, see no. 31. The firm was incorporated on 4 April 1905 and was taken over by Messrs. Mappin and Webb in May 1968. |
